The Defused (Fused Tooth) Venus flytrap is a menacing plant. Depending on the time in the growing season and the age of the plant, its cilia (teeth) will appear differently. Sometimes, they will display as short, jagged teeth. At other times, closer to the middle of the growing season they will appear as long fused teeth which sometimes fuse so much that they fold inward into the trap as a large single flap.
Due to our line of Fused Tooth plants seemingly no longer expressing the fused trait, we are transitioning the name of our line of Fused Tooth flytraps to “Defused.” We cannot call them Sawtooth or Piranha, because they may genetically NOT be – and we take genetics very seriously at Wicked Botany! When grown in our region or perhaps due to tissue culturing, our Fused Tooth plants resemble Sawtooth flytraps or something similar. The original parent plant sourced from The Flytrap Store circa 2015 can be seen in the last photo above. Please note that once we received that plant, it failed to produce any more fused traps. It is often hard to pinpoint the reason for such variable expressivity, but such behavior is not uncommon in some of the stranger flytrap cultivars. It could be that the fused trait is genetic and simply not expressed in our climate or it could be that the trait is actually epigenetic and more unstable than a solely DNA-based trait.
